i dont know what any of this means because its math so i will assume this proves my point exactly thank you lauren
maybe i just proved that flamingos poop water bottles
what would you do then
#fabulousclockworkassuming people are straight has “literally nothing” to do with homophobia?
Correct, as I’ve explained twice now.
well how about the significant harm that that mentality does to lgb people?
If the simple fact that we make up 10% of the population, and thus the average person is not likely to be gay, bi, or asexual, is harming you, then I’d say that’s your own problem of coping to fix. Because the statistics aren’t changing any time soon.
or the fact that it points to an underlying association in many straight people’s minds between being lgb and stereotypical and/or negative qualities.
No, it just points to an understanding of math and statistics.
and like in what world does every writer carefully consider making each one of their characters bisexual, and every reader carefully consider whether to interpret each character as bisexual, only to decide that they must be straight because statistical probability?
All of them.
but not straight ones
Except all the times that characters who actually have been explicitly stated as straight or have only had straight relationships/crushes are still shipped in gay relationships, as I see literally all the time. I honestly see far more gay ships of characters actually explicitly depicted/stated as straight or only ever seen in straight canon relationships on the whole than I see het ships official or otherwise.
As someone who prefers shipping characters that are either officially a couple or strongly hinted, both canon gay and canon straight, the fandom tendency to turn everyone gay regardless of canon likelihood gets annoying.
this has been said literally hundreds of times but the difference is that lgb people need more and better media representation and straight people do not.
So, double standards. It’s OK to erase heterosexuality, because revenge.
omg you’re too offended on the internet, how can i ever be associated with any of your views
Well, yes, when you’re busy getting offended at things that aren’t offensive, you look ridiculous, which makes it hard for the people who have serious issues to deal with. As someone who’s been bullied rather viciously in the past, I hate that it’s harder for real problems to get addressed because folks are busy crying over the equivalent of a paper cut, or even not actually being injured at all. There are a lot more pressing issues facing us LGBT people than fictional shipping statistics based on being realistic and not homophobia.
what that gets met with is resentment at the fact that someone could possibly think a character isn’t straight unless it’s explicit in the text.
Because that’s how media conventions and statistics work, yes. But in any case, I’ve subjected my poor followers to enough of this silliness as it is, so this is my last response. If you want to get offended at math, I guess I can’t stop you.
then i guess i won’t respond to this expect to say that i think you are hugely overestimating the emphasis that “math and statistics” has on the average person’s life and perception of media and social issues?
but obviously before an author writes a book, they want to make sure the statistics accurately reflect the real world. it’s simple, see:
if we want to figure out the probability of 2 out of 6 characters being homosexual in a book that accurately reflects the statistics of society, we first have to find out the probability of at least two men in the group being gay, then double it to count for the probability of at least two women in the group being lesbians. I’m going to use data from 2011, which shows that 11% of the population feels at least some same-sex sexual attraction. (I’m also assuming that the statistics are the same for men and women.) So I’m going to make a tree in order to calculate the probability of one man in the group being gay.

So the probability of one male being gay would be 0.5*0.11=0.055. Now we’re going to perform a binomial cdf to find the probability of at least two men in this group of 6 being gay (and therefore have a possibility of a relationship). So the values that I’m going to input into the binomial cdf calculator are n=6 (because there are 6 people in the group), p=0.055 (because that is the probability of a single success), and k>2 (because we’re looking for 2 or more successes). And we get the probability of 2 or more gay men in a group of 6 to be about 0.039. Now we double this number to account for the women and get an overall probability of 0.078. There is a 7.8% chance of a group of 6 society-reflecting characters contains at least 2 people of the same gender who may be attracted to each other. Since this is statistically significant at the α level of 10%, then we can reject the idea that this would probably happen in a statistically accurate situation.
In conclusion, it’s ridiculous to expect authors to write gay relationships ever. And I’m sure that readers won’t be upset about this at all because the statistics are very clear and simple. Thank you, jeysiec, for pointing this out.
